Toaru Majutsu no Index Novels' Haimura Draws Film's New Characters

A magazine article revealed this week that the Toaru Majutsu no Index novel illustrator Kiyotaka Haimura is drawing several new characters for the series' film adaptation. The original novels' author Kazuma Kamachi also wrote several dozen pages that flesh out new details of Academy City and the Magic side, sample text for characters and scenes, and story details just for the film.

Hiroshi Nishikiori (Magic Tree House, Azumanga Daioh, Angelic Layer) is returning to direct the project at the studio J.C. Staff (with CG produced by Sanzigen). Hiroyuki Yoshino (Macross Frontier, Accel World, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion) is scripting the film based on Kamachi's new story. Maiko Iuchi (Waiting in the Summer, Dog Days) is returning to compose the soundtrack.

In the story, just before the completion of the Academy City space elevator "Endymion," the main characters Kamijo and Index encounter a level 0 girl named Arisa. The Magicians are after Arisa, and they attack Academy City. A female leader named Shattoaura leads a unit from Academy City against the attack. Kamijyo and Index learn from Stiyl that Arisa is key to a brewing war between the sides of Magic and Science.

The first Toaru Majutsu no Index light novel series inspired two television anime series, as well as A Certain Scientific Railgun manga that inspired its own anime franchise. Funimation licensed the first Index series and the Railgun anime, while Seven Seas Entertainment is publishing the Railgun manga.

The film is slated to open in Japan in February 2013.
